Stereolithography Goes Big
When it comes to hobby-level 3D printing, most of us use plastic filament deposited by a hot end. Nearly all the rest are using stereolithography — projecting light into a photosensitive resin. Filament printers have typical build volumes ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 cubic centimeters and even larger isn’t unusual. By contrast, SLA printers are often much smaller. A 1,200 CC SLA printer is typical and the cheaper printers are sometimes as little as 800 CCs. Perhaps that’s why [3D Printing Nerd] (otherwise known as [Joel]) was excited to get his hands on a Peopoly Phenom which has a build area of over 17,000 CCs. You can see the video review, below.
He claims that it is even bigger than a Formilab 3L, although by our math that has a build volume of around 20,000 CCs. On the other hand, the longest dimension on the Peopoly is 40 cm which is 6.5 cm longer than the 3L, so maybe that’s what he means. Either way, the printer is huge. That’s nearly 16 inches which is big even for a filament printer. Regardless of which one is bigger, the Peopoly is certainly much less expensive coming in at around $1,800 versus the 3L’s almost $10,000 price tag.
You can see on the video the machine is huge. It also wasn’t packed very well and took some cosmetic damage. It is also very loud thanks to a giant fan within. The prints did look good, though.
In particular, watching the huge djinn lamp grow out of the resin bath was pretty impressive. [Joel] found that some of his techniques used with smaller printers had to scale up when dealing with prints this large. With some finishing and painting, [Joel] wound up with an awesome lamp that wasn’t short on printed detail.
If you are wondering about the differences between printing with filament vs resin, we can help. If $1,800 is still too rich for you, you can get by with a few hundred, but with a 750 CC build volume.

YouTube star Grandpa Kitchen, who cooked gigantic meals for orphans, has died
YouTube channel Grandpa Kitchen has announced its beloved star Narayana Reddy passed away on October 27. The 73-year-old resident of Telangana, India, rose to internet fame through his popular cooking videos, in which he prepared ridiculously large portions of food.
Reddy's outsized meals weren't a simple pursuit of internet notoriety, but a reflection of his equally outsized heart. The results of Reddy's cooking went straight into to the mouths of hungry orphans, while the proceeds from his YouTube channel are reportedly donated to charities.
"Our goal is to provide basic necessities like food, clothing, school supplies and birthday gifts to orphans," states Grandpa Kitchen's Patreon. Read more...

Multimeter Display Perked Up With Nixies, LEDs, And Neon Tubes
Just because something is newer than something else doesn’t automatically make it better. Of course the opposite is also true, but when it comes to displays on bench multimeters, a fancy LCD display is no guarantee of legibility. Take the Hewlett Packard HP 3478A multimeter; the stock transflective display with its 14-segment characters is so hard to read that people usually have to add a backlight to use it.
That wasn’t good enough for [cyclotronboy], though, who chose to completely replace the stock 3478A display with Nixie tubes. He noticed that with a little modification, six IN-17 tubes just fit in the window vacated by the LCD. He sniffed out the serial data stream going to the display with a collection of XOR gates and flip-flops, which let him write the code for a PIC18F4550. The finished display adds a trio of rectangular LEDs for the + and – indicators, and an HDLO-1414 four-character alphanumeric display to indicate units and the like. And the decimal points? Tiny neon bulbs. It already looks miles better than the stock display, and with the addition of a red filter, it should look even better.
If you’re stuck with a lame LCD multimeter but Nixies don’t quite do it for you, worry not – an LED conversion is possible too.

Modern first aid ditches the dummies for VR and fireworks
The idea of first aid training and emergency response makes some people squeamish, and that’s understandable. Maybe you can’t stand the sight of blood, or think you’re not good in a crisis. But in case you haven’t noticed, the world is a dangerous place and there’s never a bad time to train up.
Not everyone is cut out to be a paramedic or an ER nurse. We can all play a role though, and first aid training is the best way to make sure that you’re not standing around helplessly waiting for the pros to arrive.
It’s no secret that hospitals and emergency staff are overloaded, and there is no denying that paramedics are struggling with the increased workload. The potential for low-frequency, high-risk emergencies is greater than before, and now is the right time for all of us to play a role in ensuring the health and safety of those around us Read more...

George R.R. Martin pledges not to write for prequel series 'House of the Dragon' until he finishes that damn book
Posting to his blog on Wednesday, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has declared he won't write for newly announced Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon until he finishes Winds of Winter — even though he really wants to. It's a bit like when you promise yourself delicious chocolate cake if you finish your 5K run.
"I expect to be involved in [the production of House of the Dragon] to some extent… and, who knows, if things work out, I may even be able to script a few episodes, as I did for the first four seasons of Game Of Thrones," wrote Martin in his post.
"But… let me make this perfectly clear… I am not taking on any scripts until I have finished and delivered Winds Of Winter. Winter is still coming, and Winds remains my priority, as much as I’d love to write an episodes of House" (emphasis Martin's). Read more...

Twitter's new ad policy prompts politicians to call out Facebook
Jack Dorsey took a swing at Mark Zuckerberg, and politicians took note.
On Wednesday the Twitter CEO announced a new policy governing political advertisements — namely, that in contrast to Facebook, his company would no longer accept them. In doing so, he specifically alluded to Zuckerberg's defense of allowing political figures to pay to spread misinformation. Elected officials, both past and present, seized the opportunity to pile on.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that Twitter's move was a "good call," before adding that "Not allowing for paid disinformation is one of the most basic, ethical decisions a company can make." Read more...

Numpy Comes To Micro Python
[Zoltán] sends in his very interesting implementation of a NumPy-like library for micropython called ulab.
He had a project in MicroPython that needed a very fast FFT on a micro controller, and was looking at all of the options when it occurred to him that a more structured approach like the one we all know and love in CPython would be possible on a micro controller too. He thus ended up with a python library that could do the FFT 50 times faster than the the pure Python implementation while providing all the readability and ease of use benefits that NumPy and Python together provide.
As cool as this is, what’s even cooler is that [Zoltan] wrote excellent documentation on the use of the library. Not only can this documentation be used for his library, but it provides many excellent examples of how to use MicroPython itself.
We really recommend that fans of Python and NumPy give this one a look over!

Privacy groups actually side with Uber in scooter data fight
In Los Angeles, a battle's been slowly brewing between scooter-shares and the transportation department. Now, privacy organizations are taking sides.
Scooter companies like the Uber-owned Jump are not having it with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) data-gathering policies required for operating a scooter company in the city. Back in March, LADOT gave year-long permits to Bird, Lyft, Lime, Bolt, Sherpa, Spin, and Wheels to offer app-based rides on two-wheeled electric vehicles. Uber's Jump was given a temporary permit.
Uber (and to its credit, Lyft) balked at parts of the permit about data policies. LADOT wanted real-time data as part of its Mobility Data Specification (MDS) system to collect data from the companies, as it was mandated that they "provide real-time information about how many of their vehicles are in use at any given time." Uber was down to give data about its scooters like it does in other cities like Oakland and Seattle, just not the way LADOT was demanding it. Read more...

'The Grudge's' first trailer is here, and please pray for John Cho
The first trailer of 2020's The Grudge has arrived just in time for Halloween, though nobody in it is in the mood for trick or treating.
Not to be confused with the 2004 film of the same name, this version of The Grudge is a reboot of the Japanese-American horror series, which I did not watch because I fear death.
The trailer for the new Grudge features John Cho as Peter Spencer, a real estate agent trying to sell a lovely house that should be burned to the ground. He seems like a good guy who's just trying to do his job, and I sincerely hope he does not die.
Andrea Riseborough also appears as Muldoon, a detective who absolutely did not sign up for this when she joined the force. Upon investigating the house and inadvertently gaining a pale, dark-haired follower, she must keep both herself and her son safe from the eternally angry ghost. Good luck with that. Read more...

Uber Money will give the company an even tighter grip on its drivers' finances
Uber is starting to look more and more like a bank.
The ride hailing giant unveiled Uber Money, a new division for the company focused on providing financial services for its riders and drivers, starting with debit and credit cards.
Though Uber has dabbled in these kinds of services in the past, Uber Money represents the company's most significant investment in the space. The move will also likely prompt criticism for the company, which has faced pushback over low wages and its resistance to providing benefits to drivers.

People are declassifying their pets after Trump tweets photo of military dog
The president's tweet about declassifying a picture of the dog who assisted in a mission that ended with ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's death is a meme now.
2019 continues to be unreal.
The dog, whose name remains classified, chased al-Baghdadi down a dead-end tunnel after concerns that al-Baghdadi was wearing a suicide vest. He indeed was and detonated the vest in the tunnel, killing himself and three children in the blast.
The unnamed dog is believed to have been injured by an electrocution, CNN reports, but is recovering.
A defense official told CNN that because the dog was part of an Army Delta force operation — the secretive special forces group that takes on high-risk missions — "we can't tell you the name of the dog." Read more...
