Major Apple parts supplier Foxconn breaks ground for factory in Wisconsin

TwitterFacebook

Foxconn, a major Apple parts supplier, broke ground in Wisconsin yesterday for its first plant in the United States.

The project located at Mount Pleasant in southeast Wisconsin is estimated to cost $10 billion and is projected to create thousands of jobs. It's the largest economic development project in Wisconsin's history, and when it is done, will manufacture LCD screen panels.

It's uncertain whether Apple will use these screens, however, since it mainly sources them from Samsung, LG, and Japan Display. Its recent screens, additionally, have departed from traditional LCD panels — the electronics giant followed the lead of its chief competitor Samsung by incorporating OLED screens into its latest designs. Tessa Thompson says she's attracted to men and women. Happy pride!

TwitterFacebook

It's not officially Pride month until a well-loved celebrity comes out as some kind of queer.

In a new interview with Porter, actress Tessa Thompson says that she is attracted to both men and women. When asked about her alleged romantic relationship with Janelle Monáe, Thompson chose to be more circumspect.

"I can take things for granted because of my family – it’s so free and you can be anything that you want to be. I’m attracted to men and also to women," Thompson told the publication.

Of her relationship with Monáe, Thompson then added: "If I bring a woman home, [or] a man, we don’t even have to have the discussion … That was something I was conscientious of in terms of this declaration around Janelle and myself. I want everyone else to have that freedom and support that I have from my loved ones. But so many people don’t. So, do I have a responsibility to talk about that? Do I have a responsibility to say in a public space that this is my person?” Read more...

All the Pride merch that tried just a little too hard this year

TwitterFacebook

This year, perhaps more than any other, American corporations want the LGBTQ community to know that they're their friends. Their best friends, really.

The only thing they ask for in return is our undying brand loyalty.

2018 was a particularly grating year for corporations who like to demonstrate their commitment to the queer community with rainbow shot glasses and flashy donations to LGBTQ nonprofits. Week after week, my inbox has been flooded with PR pitches to check out the latest gay vodka or discounted queer doughnuts (because gay people have been discriminated against in the...doughnut-sphere?) Soft on Crimea

On Thursday, the House Judiciary Committee grilled FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein about FBI bias in the Hillary Clinton email investigation. Two hours into the hearing, Rep. Karen Bass, a California Democrat, changed the subject. She said that a recent FBI report, Black Identity Extremists Likely Motivated to Target Law Enforcement Officers, had been cited in the arrest of a young man with no record of violence. She worried that “law enforcement agencies” would use the report to target “African American activists who might protest police violence.”
