How to Keep Your Business Running Whilst Going Through a Divorce

Going through a divorce is a significant event in anyone’s life and it can feel like life has just stopped in its tracks. There is a lot to think about and work can sometimes be hard to prioritize. It can be hard to concentrate on the task at hand. Working is a great way to take your mind off divorce and add a bit of normality to your life, and if you own your business, this is especially important. Here are a few tips on how to keep your business running whilst going through a divorce.

Get Help

Be honest with yourself. Whether the divorce is fresh or has been a long time coming, you still need to deal with your emotions and accept what is happening. Avoiding your emotions is not good for your mental health and can impact you negatively later. You will probably need a few days off to get yourself together and mourn the loss of your marriage, even if you feel like you have come to terms with it. If possible, get someone to run your business for a few days and be at the end of the phone if they need advice. Talk to your friends and family. Holding back the way you feel is the worst way to deal with it. If this isn’t possible, can you close for a few days, or get your parents or friends to pick up the children so you have one less thing to worry about?

Plan

The easiest way to get everything in order when there is so much going on in your head and with your emotions is to plan each day and take it one step at a time. Keep it on your tablet, phone, or on paper in your diary, but whichever way you do it, write what needs doing that day and prioritize. If you are struggling and something can be done later in the week, give yourself a break; you are going through a hard time. Schedule in some time to do what you love, whether that’s a day out with your children, friends or family. When going through a divorce and running a business, you need time to destress too.

Professional Advice

When going through marital dissolution, you need to find a lawyer that you can talk to and trust to help you get everything in order, such as the ones at Bremer Whyte Brown & O’Meara LLP. If you own the business together, this is even more important, as you may want to buy their half if you cannot work together. There is a lot of legal documentation that comes with a divorce that many people struggle with. Having a lawyer who listens to what you want will ensure they can fight for your rights, meaning one less thing to worry about, and you can focus on running your business.

Remember, don’t be so hard on yourself. You are going through a tough time and it is OK to make mistakes. Get as much support as possible around you for those days when you are really struggling to keep it together.
