Social media exploded after news that JNU had asked renowned historian Romila Thapar, a professor emerita of the university, to submit her CV so that a varsity committee could evaluate her work and decide whether she should continue to hold the honorary position. The JNU administration, pointing to its rulebook, stated that the procedure was mandatory for all emeritus professors above the age of 75.
