My Road to Direct Sales Success
I always wanted more control over my life and my income but it took becoming a mom for me to make that happen. I had gotten laid off while on maternity leave with my daughter, Jenna. I was a creative director at a successful pharmaceutical marketing company. The company was bought out by a large firm and they decided to let the top management go. Before they let me go, however, they had me train three others to cover my position. They later hired a man do my job at a much larger salary than I had been making. I had been with the company 14 years so, as you can imagine, I was devastated, especially with a newborn baby to take care of.
It was then that I vowed never to go back to corporate life. I wanted more freedom to be with my family, more money and in general more control over my life. If I could find something I loved it would be a wonderful bonus. I decided that starting my own business was the way to achieve all of that.
I entered the direct sales industry after that and tried every company imaginable to get by. I loved being a work-at-home mom and cherished my time with my daughter. I never wanted to leave her!
By December of 2011, I had been successfully working with another direct sales company for over eight years. I had grown my business and done quite well but I was getting burnt out. Then one of my neighbors left a Pink Zebra catalog at my house. I learned that Pink Zebra is a direct sales company specializing in home fragrance and décor that is unique and customizable. My daughter and I were hooked!
After my neighbor left, Jenna and I looked over the catalog. I had set it aside, not knowing that Jenna has circled the opportunity kit, like a kid circling her Christmas gifts. The next day Jenna begged me to buy the kit. The kits were on sale then so I figured for $74 I would get lots of candles and sprinkles. I didn’t really have any intentions of working the business. I was already in direct sales and wanted a break from all I had been doing. I had reached the top level in that business, Executive Director, but I was losing interest in the business.
Encouraged by Jenna, I ordered the Pink Zebra starter kit. While I was waiting for the kit to arrive, I was signing people up! Pink Zebra had a sponsoring incentive that month, and I was ready for a new challenge! Zebra fever was starting to take over!
When the kit did arrive, Jenna helped me get it organized. She took the kit with her on a trip to the coffee shop with her dad. That very day she came back with our first order! To this day that customer remains a client.
It is so very refreshing to be able to include Jenna in this family business. My previous direct sales business did not allow me to do that.
Pink Zebra has opened up so many avenues for me and my family. After seeing how easy it was to sign people on and get orders, I decided to work the business! In 9 short months, I became a Director! In fact, years later my husband decided to join the team and is now a Director with Pink Zebra. This is truly a family business for us.
I have always had an honest desire to make people happy. It’s never been just about the money for me. I love selling this amazing product and I love helping others with this amazing business opportunity. I’m very focused on the people I work with each day. For me, it’s all about an honest product and an honest opportunity to succeed.
I am currently in one of the top positions in Pink Zebra, Executive Director, and hold the title for most awarded in the company out of over 40,000 Consultants nationwide. I get to work with so many amazing men and women and help them build their businesses! I sell a product I love and help others gain control of their lives and feel better about themselves in the process.
To date, I’ve earned an iPad and trips for two to places like Punta Cana, Jamaica, Costa Rica and Panama. I’ve also already earned a trip for two to Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic next year.

Business Owners’ Love of Work May Hinder Succession Planning
Nationwide Draws Parallel Between Number of Business Owners with No Plans to Retire and Lack of Succession Plan
Over 70 percent of business owners polled in a recent Nationwide survey noted that they are not planning to retire, don’t know when they’ll retire or do not plan to retire for 11 years or more.
A majority (55 percent) of business owners who do not plan to retire report that they love their business too much to do so. Even more Boomers (68 percent) indicate this is a major reason for delaying retirement. The other reasons for postponing retirement include not feeling financially stable enough to retire (24 percent) and not trusting anyone else to run their business (17 percent).
Interestingly, the same survey noted that two in three business owners do not have a succession plan in place, with almost 40 percent of them lacking a clear understanding of their need for one. Counterintuitively, twice as many Boomers as Millennials have not established a business succession plan (74 percent vs 37 percent).
“Many business leaders correlate succession planning with retirement planning,” Kirt Walker, president and COO of Nationwide Financial explained. “If a business owner has no immediate plans to retire, then he or she may not feel a sense of urgency around valuing the business and outlining a plan for successors. Strategically, however, this is a tremendous oversight in protecting the business and partners from an unexpected event impacting key leaders.”
Should a business owner face a serious illness or untimely death, having a business succession plan defined would facilitate a smooth and controlled transition, create certainty about the price, terms and financing of the business and provide a sense of security for surviving family members.
Many business owners are also unaware that most states will use their authority to determine who receives a person’s property if a plan is not in place. Sixty percent of the business owners surveyed were unaware or unsure that, without a defined plan, the state could determine their business’ future.
Getting Started
Business owners without a plan can simplify the planning process by breaking it into five manageable steps working with their financial advisor:
Step 1: Set goals and objectives.
Step 2: Contact your advisor to determine the fair market value of the company through resources like Nationwide’s Business Valuation Tool.
Step 3: Consider viable options for the business and identify how the options would play out in a disability, retirement or death scenario.
Step 4: Develop a plan and execute documents in partnership with an advisor, attorney and accountant.
Step 5: Fund the plan.
“Business owners will have greater leverage and control in determining their legacy if they’ve been proactive in planning before an unforeseen event occurs,” Walker added. “If you’re a business owner and don’t yet have a succession plan in place, the time is now to begin this process.”
Methodology
Nationwide commissioned a 20-minute, online survey among a sample of 1,069 U.S. small business owners. Small business owners are defined as having between 1-299 employees, 18 years or older, and self-reported being a sole or partial owner of their business. The margin of error for this sample is +/-3 percent at the 95 percent confidence level. Conducted by Edelman Intelligence, a full-service consumer research firm, the survey was fielded between May 16-24, 2017. From Reader’s Digest at 13 to Building NYC and Beyond
Some of the greatest success stories begin with a person finding their passion during their teenage years. And, so it began with Westchester/NYC contractor, Michael Bordes of Jedson Company, LLC.
Michael learned everything he knows from being a laborer at a very young age.
When he was just a teenager, his father would get a monthly subscription of Reader’s Digest – How-to books – on construction plumbing, electrical work, and various home projects. Upon reading the books, he began helping around the house by completing various projects for his parents. By the time he was 17 years old, he was doing all the repairs on his Mother’s home. As a matter of fact, he was so good at doing the repairs that his mother no longer called anyone else for maintenance; she only wanted Michael to do them, and he did.
Before Michael started his own business, as a 14-year old who was anxious to work and make money Michael would try to get any work he could. He worked shining shoes, delivering newspapers and finally after mustering up some courage he rang the doorbell of a local mason. Michael asked the mason for a job!
The man responded by asking him, “What are you going do?” to which Michael replied by saying he would do anything, and that he just wanted to work. He went to work that weekend, leaving the house early in the morning to work a job in Riverdale, NY with a truck full of men. He had no money, no gloves, no lunch, no skill; just a wanted to work. His job for the day was to mix mortar and bring that mortar to the masons.
Noticing how unprepared he was, one of the older men working with Michael gave him a pair of their gloves. At the end of the day, he mixed so much concrete that he had blisters on hands. That day, he drank water from a garden hose throughout the day and ate food scraps from the guys he was working with. This was another lesson learned that made him realize how determined he was to be successful and to make something of himself.
By his senior year in high school, while the majority of the other teens his age was partying or preparing for college, Michael was preparing for the rest of his life. He started a painting, plastering, and ceramic tile business, and by the time he finished his senior year of high school, he had 6 employees working for him. One day, Michael was taking a dip in his backyard pool while his employees were working. His father, a NYC fireman, came home in the afternoon and saw him sitting in the pool before he went in the house. He came up to him and question what he was doing and why he wasn’t working. He was so angry that he restricted Michael from ever swimming in the pool again. This predicament set the tone for Michaels work ethic and the rest of his life, molding him into the businessman he is today. From that day on, aside from further education, he worked 15-16 hours per day minimum, 7 days, every single week.
After his start during adolescence as a laborer, Michael propelled through the many phases of the construction business. In the early 1980s, Michael completed his formal training in construction management at Williamstown University. He then launched his career as a leader and supervisor, first over independent projects such as building a house for a doctor in the prestigious Wykagyl Estates– a 73 home sub-division located in New Rochelle, New York, which has won the New Rochelle’s Mayor’s Award for Excellence, then eventually over his own team of employees and associates as the President of what is now well known as Jedson Company LLC, which began its broad range of operation in 2004.
Michael’s knowledge and expertise, combined with exceptional directorial and organizational skills, continued to present to him bigger and broader opportunities with more and more satisfied, repeat clients. His buildings projects have taken him all over the world, with the majority regionally located along the East Coast.

The Psychology Behind the Perfect Pitch
If you are running a certain type of business from your home, you might be reliant on occasional stretches working for certain clients. Or you might need to cultivate clients who come to you regularly for your goods or services. In either case, you will likely have to make a pitch to these clients to first secure their business. This is a very underrated part of running a home business that many people neglect to learn or perfect before they embark upon their endeavor. The only way your business can thrive is if you have a steady stream of clients, ideally ones who can provide repeat business. That can only occur if you know how to convince them in the first place.

Striking the right balance in your pitch is a subtle skill that is nonetheless absolutely crucial. You want to seem enthusiastic about the job but not overly so. By the same token, you don’t want to play it so cool that you come off as uninterested. When in doubt, be sincere about your desire for the job, and the client will appreciate it.
The only way to get really good at making pitches is to practice them beforehand. Being prepared will breed confidence in your ability to think on your feet so that, should the client throw something unexpected at you, you’ll be ready for it.

In his first State of the Union address, President Trump called on Congress to pass two major pieces of bipartisan legislation this year: an immigration bill and an infrastructure bill. The immigration legislation was the same proposal from last week that has already been left for dead on Capitol Hill, and the infrastructure concept he laid out has been consistently trashed by Democrats since his campaign first introduced it in 2016. Trump called for bipartisanship, but there were no winks nor nods to indicate to Democrats that he was willing to budge from his already-known positions.

The first reactions for 'Black Panther' are in, and yes, you can believe the hype
The hype around Black Panther was certainly palpable.
It already has the biggest pre-sale numbers for a Marvel movie, and even Lupita Nyong'o — who plays Nakia in the film — struggled to get tickets for the opening night.
Following the global premiere, press were able to share their initial thoughts on the movie on social media from 1 a.m. ET Tuesday. And fortunately, it looks like we can all truly believe in the excitement.

Uber's biggest rival in India expands internationally
Uber is set to meet a familiar foe Down Under.
For the first time, ride-hailing giant Ola is setting up outside of India. The company said it plans to launch in Australia in early 2018, and is currently signing up drivers in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
The latest Uber challenger follows in the footsteps of Estonian ride-hailing company Taxify, which launched in Sydney last December, and recently began operations in Melbourne.
On its website, Ola said it will initially charge a 7.5 percent commission from drivers. For the time being, it's considerably lower than Taxify's 15 percent, and Uber, which is around 25 percent. Ola is yet to reveal its entire fare structure in Australia. Read more...

2 cops allegedly ate some marijuana edibles, got way too high, and called for backup
Two cops from Toronto got themselves in a batch of trouble on Sunday when they allegedly ate some marijuana edibles while on duty, got really stoned, and were forced to call for help.
The CBC reports that the two officers, who are part of 13 Division, have been suspended pending an investigation. Over the weekend, the Toronto police raided a pot dispensary, which is apparently where the cops copped the edibles.
FYI, folks: Ingesting marijuana is not the same as smoking or vaporizing marijuana. Eating pot will get you WAY more stoned. Professionals suggest waiting a solid two hours after ingesting edibles before taking more, because the onset of effects can be quite slow. Read more...

Someone is already trying to stop sales of Elon Musk's flamethrower
Elon Musk's plan to sell Boring Company branded flamethrowers is certainly a fantastic bit of marketing, and it's no wonder pre-sales are on fire.
While Musk has made assurances that the flamethrower will meet national guidelines by emitting a flame less than 10 feet, one Californian assemblyman wants to put an end to the idea for good.
Democrat Miguel Santiago announced Monday he will introduce legislation aimed at blocking the sale of the $500 flamethrower, in the state of California at least.
"I honestly thought it was a joke when the article was read to me — while I was sitting in Los Angeles traffic," Santiago said in a statement on Twitter. Read more...
